Memories with Mike by Paul Ahronson

Hope you and the family are coping as best you can at this time. I am sure there will be many stories of Mike’s time at GKN… (not sure if this one is worthy of an inclusion, or if Mike ever told Carole about it!)
It was early in my Career at GKN, and one of my earliest memories of Mike at Cowes came on a trip “Up North” to chase parts out of a supplier.. as most of us know this is one of Mike’s favourite jobs..
Mike had recently bought a new “Racing Red” Honda, Type R I think.. Mike was beaming with pride as we departed the Car ferry from Southampton on our way up, telling me how quickly this beast could accelerate… we entered the M271 with clear road ahead… Mike looked across at me and put his foot down…. Whoosh… we took off like a rocket, and I felt pinned to my seat, Mike chatted away while we accelerated and we lost sight of the road ahead… “Mike the traffic has stopped dead ahead” I shouted as my gaze looked forward…. Mike slammed on the brakes… the soft low profile tyres screeched and we came to a stop with a trail of rubber tyre marks behind us but thank fully avoiding a collision… Mike was a little red faced and the car chatter fell silent for a time…. needless to say the rest of the trip up and then back was more sedate, although we did achieve Mike’s main objective of bringing a car load of urgent parts back with him to Cowes.
